Ask how kratom was prepared before pouches and capsules, and the answer is a pot of water on the fire. Tea is the oldest way to take the leaf, and it asks for very little: clean water, low heat, a strainer and time. Here is how to brew it the unhurried way.

The Kettle Came First

In the parts of Southeast Asia where the tree grows, leaf was brewed for generations before any other format existed. Families simmered it, strained it through cloth and shared the pot. Today’s fine powder is the same leaf, milled more evenly, so the old method suits it well. The one rule the tradition keeps above all others is simple: a gentle simmer, never a rolling boil.

Gathering Your Things

  • Leaf powder. Any finely milled whole-leaf powder will do.
  • Water. Fresh and cold, with a little extra to allow for steam.
  • A small saucepan. Nothing fancy is needed.
  • A strainer. Mesh, cheesecloth or a paper coffee filter. Each one gives a clearer cup than the last.
  • Lemon, if you like. A little acid brightens the cup against the leaf’s natural bitterness.

The Slow Simmer

  1. Heat gentlyWarm the water until small bubbles form at the edge of the pan and steam rises, then turn the heat down before it boils.
  2. Stir in the leafAdd your usual serving size from the label; the powder will float and swirl rather than dissolve.
  3. WaitHold the low simmer for fifteen to twenty minutes, stirring from time to time as the water darkens.
  4. Let it settleTake the pan off the heat and leave it a few minutes so the leaf sinks to the bottom.
  5. Strain slowlyPour through your strainer into a cup, leaving the settled leaf behind in the pan.

Powder never truly dissolves in water. It hangs in the liquid, which is why the rest and the slow pour matter so much. Rush them and you drink leaf; take your time and you drink tea.

Choosing Leaf for the Pot

The vein color shows in the cup. Greens tend to brew bright and grassy, reds darker and earthier, and whites somewhere in between. Whole Herbs Green Maeng Da powder makes a clean, light pot, while Whole Herbs Red Bali powder gives a deeper, rounder one. Capsules are not made for brewing, since the shell adds nothing to the pot; our comparison of kratom capsules vs powder explains when each format earns its place.

Seasoning the Cup

Kratom tea is earthy and a little bitter, more like a strong mate than a garden herb tea. The old pairings work with that character rather than hiding it:

  • Lemon and honey, the standard, for acid and a soft finish.
  • Sliced ginger, simmered with the leaf, which suits a red brew.
  • A cinnamon stick, for a gentle warmth.
  • Fresh mint, torn in after straining, which lifts a green brew.

For a summer glass, brew a little stronger than usual, strain over ice and add lemon. If you enjoy a morning cup, our kratom and coffee brewing guide covers that pairing too.

Brewing Ahead and Keeping It

A larger pot can be brewed and kept. Cool it, seal it in a clean jar and refrigerate it. It holds for three or four days, though the flavor is best in the first two. Give the jar a shake before you pour, since a little sediment will settle.

The dry leaf deserves the same care. Keep powder sealed, cool, dark and dry, away from the steam of the stove where you brew. Our page on storing kratom the right way has the details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why simmer instead of boil?

A gentle simmer is the traditional method and gives a smoother cup. A hard boil tends to make the brew harsh.

Why is there grit at the bottom of my cup?

Fine leaf stays suspended. Let the pan rest longer before pouring, and try a paper filter for a clearer cup.

Can I make kratom tea from capsules?

Loose powder is the better choice. It is the same leaf without the shell, and it brews more evenly.

How long does brewed kratom tea keep?

Three to four days, sealed in the refrigerator. It tastes best within the first two.
